On Friday some friends and I attended the debut of an interesting new film series at Starr Space in Bushwick (108 Starr St between Wilson and Knickerbocker) where the short, stop-motion animation films of Władysław Starewicz were accompanied by a live brass band. The films, including The Cameraman's Revenge, were stunning for their time (1912-1933) and still managed to charm everyone in the packed audience. The band was prepared but still played loose and was obviously having a lot of fun.
Overall, the event reminded me why I love living in Williamsburg. I know this blog can occasionally go into snark mode, but I never really meant it to be a forum where I would bitch and complain about things. I wanted it to be a place where I could show off and encourage the work of the creative individuals who live and work here. People talk a lot of shit about trust-funded hipsters, but I don't know anyone with a trust fund. I do know a lot of people who work really hard for not a lot of money to create something cool like the event I went to on Friday. Anyway, I hope this new film series takes off, I thought it was amazing.
