Bedford and Berry Opens on S 6th Street

Bb_320 OMG, Bottomless Dish has an amazing report on the new Williamsburg restaurant Bedford and Berry. They serve things like fresh cookies and spiked-milk, frog legs and more. The space is full of beautiful antique touches and the staff is super-friendly. Also, the writer for Bottomless Dish is like some kind of super genius, like the equivalent of two, nay, three Dan Browns put together.

Save Ferris ... er I Mean Domino

DominoThe Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the new version of the Domino Sugar Plant. The building will add 2,200 housing units to the area. I recommend leaving for work at like 4am to get a seat on the L train. [Curbed]

Brooklyn the Brand

Made_in_bk

Yesterday the New York Times published a very interesting piece on the branding power of Brooklyn. Apparently hip Japanese teenagers looove our little 'hood:

The name has, so far, been a powerhouse. Carolyn Greer, who works in the borough president’s office, said she had been swarmed by teenagers at a trade show in Japan. “They said, ‘Bedford ... Avenue,’ ” Ms. Greer said. “ ‘Williams ... burg.’ ”

Domo arigato, future Williamsburg hipsters! Also, Steve Hindy of Brooklyn Brewery is fighting with what I can only assume is Billy's Marketplace or C-Town or whatever it's called on Havemayer:

Mr. Hindy is involved in a lawsuit against a Williamsburg supermarket with a similar logo — a “B” ringed by concentric circles — and he said the legal action had already cost his company $25,000.

Mmm, this makes me hungry for an authentic Brooklyn pizza, courtesy of Domino's.

Nine Circles of Brunch

Dantes

The old Cafe One Hope was a god-awful disaster. The one time I ventured in there a bad movie was playing on Comedy Central, the bland menu featuring items like burgers and chicken fingers was completely overpriced, and the cavernous, erratically decorated space felt anything but homey. Now it's been replaced by a restaurant called Dante's (1 Hope Street), and it's serving up Southern cuisine. Meat loaf, fried chicken, fish and chips, ribs and more are all on the menu, plus they have brunch. I'm not sure if the owners are the same, but the change of menu is an encouraging sign and I just might give it a try.

In other news, Monkeytown is closed for renovations until August 1st. Let's hope they're actually doing renovations and this isn't just a another word for problems with the DOH. Godspeed, Monkeytown!

Editor's Note (6/23/2008 at 5:35pm): I would just like to make clear that I am not trying to imply Monkeytown is having problems. I am a big supporter of the restaurant and have no reason to believe that they are doing anything but renovating.

The Weekend in Rock

Gogol

The bloggers have finally taken over. The After the Jump Festival (get it?) is taking place this weekend at several Wburg venues, including Galapagos, the Music Hall of Williamsburg and on N 6th Street. Tons o' bands including Project Jenny, Project Jan and Titus Andronicus will be playing all Saturday.

This Sunday is the very first McCarren Park Pool Party, featuring The Hold Steady and The Loved Ones.

Tonight, check out the New York Times at Spike Hill, or pony up some big bucks for Gogol Bordello (pictured) at McCarren Park.

Butcher Loves Meat, Hates NYU Kids

Tommylan

Grub Street has an interesting interview with Tom Mylan (butcher for Diner and Marlow & Sons) who is organizing the UnFancy Food Show at East River Bar on June 29th, where you'll get to sample food from all kinds of local producers for a tiny fee. Fun quote from the interview:

Williamsburg has a reputation for being full of disaffected hipsters. Do they really care where their food comes from?

Absolutely. The majority are NYU-student dipshits who are buying their clothes at Urban Outfitters and are living here because it’s cool. The people that are actually the avant-garde — the people who are pushing “hipster culture” forward, who are actually intelligent and aren’t just into ironic T-shirts — are interested in a large spectrum of things, and food is just one of them.

Then We Came to a Reading

Thenwecametotheend Yes, it is possible to have fun outside of Williamsburg. Tonight, our favorite literary guides host yet another Mixer reading at Cakeshop. Joshua Ferris, author of the first-person plural chronicle of office angst "Then We Came to the End," is the big headliner, with James Marcus, John Burnham Schwartz and musical guest Michael the Blind also reading/performing.

Mixer, at Cakeshop, 152 Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side, no cover, 7pm-9pm

Knitting Factory to Open in Old Luna Lounge Space?

Risingphoenix Will the Knitting Factory rise from the ashes of the Luna Lounge? If so, it would pretty much cement Williamsburg's spot as the center of New York's music scene, as if that wasn't already established. Hopefully they won't design the interior to look like a replica of the douchiest Sunset Strip club you could ever have nightmares about, e.g. the Luna Lounge. [Gothamist]
