I've found that lots of people want the opportunity to volunteer, but don't really know where to look for the right organization. Luckily for you, there are quite a few places you can volunteer at right here in the Williamsburg.
- Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC). Cheesy acronyms aside, this organization needs people to walk dogs and play with cats, who are all looking for a comfortable home.
- Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. A generation of children is growing up on "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" and "So You Think You Can Dace." For God's sake, help our kids not be total idiots. Roald Dahl instead of Halo 3 can be your rallying cry...
- NURTUREart. A non-profit "dedicated to nurturing new contemporary art by providing exhibition opportunities and resources for both emerging artists and curators." They could always use a little help with website design, programming, special events, development, database management, event photography and more.
Also, if you don't mind a short trip on the L train to Union Square, there is the GO Project, a fine organization I have been involved with for several years now that helps tutor low-income and at-risk children from New York public schools.
