As you may or most likely may not know, this month is National Poetry Month (Apparently, it's every April, and has been since 1996. Poetry needs a new PR rep.) and WIlliamsburgers have been celebrating with epic odes and sensitive sonnets on Williamsboard, as noted by Gawker. That goes down as the only actual documented celebration thus far this month, besides the occasional recitations on early morning/late night NPR (but there have been no documented cases of anyone having listened to them).
Hopefully, April's iambic aura will lend some poetic justice to struggling independent record stores, which hope to draw crowds for Record Store Day. As detailed in this NY Times piece, there are plenty of reasons to support your deserving local record shop: among them, as mentioned in an earlier post, Regina Spektor will play for free at Soundfix. But if you find yourself out and about in the city tomorrow, you can catch local indie staples Grizzly Bear DJing at another fine independent record shop, Other Music, accompanied by Deerhunter and Tapes 'N Tapes.
Want to support your local record store, but you're low on cash? No problem! Do what plenty of others are doing in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, and loot yourself some copper! According to the Brooklyn Paper, thieves are making off with thousands of dollars worth of the stuff at constructions sites across the neighborhoods, so it can't be that tough. That's enough money for that first edition Joy Division LP you've always wanted! Plus, you'll get the added self-satisfaction of doing your part to stop the dastardly development in the burg. Just make sure that the site you loot isn't going to be a new record store.
